Is the Givi Monorack Any Good on the ADV 160?

No. I used it for 5 months. The steel broke. I had it welded, and it broke again. These days I don’t use a box at all.

How I used it

The monorack broke at 11,000km.

The roads I ride are full of potholes, so there is a lot of vibration. That may be one reason it broke.

What’s odd is that it only broke on one side. From the riding position, that’s the right side.

I kept the box light, so the monorack never carried a big load.

Welding

I had it welded at Saujana Motor, Flora Damansara. RM 30 only. The owner told me the weld wouldn’t be strong and would break again. He advised me to replace it, not weld it.

So I wanted to buy a new one. Unfortunately, the monorack for the ADV 160 was out of stock. Only the ADV 150 was available.

I was worried the left side would break next, so I had that side welded too, for a bit of support.

I like this shop. Good work. If your bike breaks, come here. They’ll weld it too 👍👍.

It broke again

The Givi base I use has an extra brake light. I was worried that if both legs snapped, the wiring would get pulled and damage the bike’s wiring.

Exactly as I was told, the weld didn’t hold. It broke again. I decided to stop using a box. Carrying things is harder now. But peace of mind is easy.

Fitting the extra brake light wiring at Impian X cost around RM 30.

Taking the monorack off at Impian X was RM 12.

I like getting work done at Impian X because the mechanics are very neat. The charges are on the high side, but I think it’s worth it (given how tidy the work is). The Impian X I mean is Impian X Subang (JJ Motorworld Sdn Bhd).

Conclusion

If you want a box on the ADV 160, don’t use the Givi monorack. Buy something tougher — one that can take at least 20kg. The price might hurt, but peace of mind comes first.

Word is the SRC Malaysia monorack is strong. I haven’t tried it — my spending priorities are elsewhere for now.

Ride safe.
