Why I’m Returning to Yes 5G: VoWiFi finally arrives for Honor!

In my previous post, 1 Thing Makes Me Fly Away From Yes 5G, I shared the frustrating reason why I had to leave Yes 5G despite its competitive pricing. The lack of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) support on my Honor device was a dealbreaker, leading to dropped calls and a very unstable experience at home.

Well, I have some good news to share—I’m officially heading back to Yes 5G!

The Quiet Breakthrough

It seems Yes 5G has quietly enabled VoWiFi support for the Honor X9D. There was no big announcement or flashy update, but the feature is now live and functional. For anyone who has struggled with indoor coverage or VoLTE instability on an Honor device, this is a massive game-changer.

Is it for everyone? (The Honor X9b Test)

While it’s working on the Honor X9D, I can confirm that the Honor X9b unfortunately does not have this feature. I tested this by putting my SIM card into an X9b, and there is no Wi-Fi calling option like in the X9D. So, if you’re on an Honor X9b, you’re out of luck for now.

Living with 5G Advanced (5G SA)

Beyond VoWiFi, I’ve also been testing their 5G Advanced (5G SA) experience. I’m currently using their 5G Advanced Prepaid 20 plan, which offers a great balance of speed and value. You can check out their latest offerings here.

Here’s how my experience has been so far:

  1. Consistent Connectivity: My phone stays connected to 5G most of the time now, significantly more than it used to stay on 4G. Even in challenging spots like shopping malls (tested in Glo Damansara and One Utama), the 5G signal holds up well.
  2. Better Battery Life: I’ve noticed my battery seems to last longer. While it could be a placebo, my observation is that with 5G SA, the phone doesn’t have to juggle multiple bands (4G + 5G) like it does with 5G NSA. This simplified connection seems much more efficient.
  3. Call Reliability: Making and receiving calls still relies on VoLTE. You’ll notice the signal drops to 4G during a call, but it’s been stable so far.
  4. Performance: Overall speeds are solid and satisfying. It’s a smooth, fast experience that finally feels “complete” for my needs.

Conclusion

The “one thing” that drove me away has been largely addressed for my main device. While the X9b still lacks VoWiFi, the support on the X9D and the overall improvements in 5G SA connectivity make Yes 5G a viable choice again.

Update 29 March 2026

After March 2026 security update, it appears that VoWiFi on Honor X9D can persist longer compared to before March 2026.
